 ASUS CD-S500/A
 Taiwanese
giant ASUSTek is famous for its mainboards and VGA cards, which can be
found in nearly every computer shop on the planet, for some time, but of
late its quality CD and DVD-ROMs have become increasingly well-known as
      well.

       The
ASUS CD-S500 has actually been on the market for quite a while, at least
since the middle of 1999.  But
since that time, there has been a near deadlock in the CD-ROM sector, as
the current technology has been pushed to its limits.
When using current lasers, it is not possible to achieve a higher
read rate than 50 or maybe 52x.  The
promising new TrueX technology uses a prism to divide the laser beam into
      three, making higher ratespossible.  But
with the rising popularity of DVD drives, this technology has not been
pursued, and so the maximum speed of CD-ROMs remains at 50x.

      A
test of the ASUS CD-S500 is therefore still interesting, in order to give
you a good basis of comparison when considering the purchase of a new
      CD-ROM drive.
